Google Meet is an increasingly popular video conferencing solution for businesses who want to leverage Google Workspace synergies and Google’s massive technological prowess, which includes Google’s Gemini AI platform.
Sound pretty good? You’re not alone.
We’ve extensively covered Microsoft Teams Certified video conferencing devices and Zoom Rooms Certified video conferencing devices. But Google Meet Certified video conferencing devices?
Let’s start with this. At present (April 2024), there’s no such thing, strictly, as a Google Meet Certification. Instead, they use the term “qualified”: Google Meet Qualified video conferencing devices are what you’re looking for.
In this blog, we go over the Google Meet hardware qualification process and introduce some of the categories and products to look for when shopping for Google Meet compatible devices.
Google Meet Qualified Video Conferencing Equipment
Google has a detailed process for ensuring the reliability and interoperability of video conferencing devices with ChromeOS-based Google Meet hardware. The qualification process doesn’t cover interoperability with Android-based Google Meet hardware.
If you’d like a full breakdown of the qualification process, visit “Google Meet peripheral qualification program” on the Google Workspace Admin Help website.
Here are the important takeaways:
- The device’s vendor must prove their legitimacy.
- The device must have proven interoperability with ChromeOS-based Google Meet hardware.
- The device must meet Google’s performance standards as tested by Google’s partner lab.
- The device, if it can, must support automatic firmware updates.
Put together, these mean that Google Meet qualified video conferencing hardware will be legitimate, interoperable, and always up-to-date with exceptional performance.
What does this mean in practice?
Google Meet touch consoles — dedicated tablets that provide a familiar, touch-based solution for managing meetings — will display the Google Meet interface. For example, you can sign into the appropriate Google account and Calendar will be right there on the Logitech Tap touchscreen controller.
Select video bars from Logitech and Poly are compatible with Google Meet, including Logitech Rally Bar and Poly Studio R30. In their documentation, Google lists video bars under the term “All-in-one.”
Google Meet has Companion Mode, which integrates remote workers and hybrid workers into the video call. While the qualification process doesn’t apply to headsets, many USB and Bluetooth headsets from brands like Jabra, Poly, and Yealink are compatible with the platform.
There are also a host of qualified audio processors, USB hubs, USB cables, and HDMI adapters for custom projects.
One final thing: You might see the term “Works with Google Meet” to indicate compatibility.
