Jabra Perform 45… or How to Use Your Bluetooth Headset as a Walkie-Talkie

Turns out, headsets are just plain nice to use. Why use a hand to hold up a handset when you can leave your hands free? Plus, a good headset gives you better sound, both for your hearing and your customer listening. And no kinks in your neck, either.

With Jabra Perform 45, you get a wireless Push-To-Talk headset that can replace the handheld walkie-talkie. You won’t have to hold up your smartphone like a walkie-talkie when using the headset.

This is a big deal for retail store workers and other teams who need to keep in touch with each other over large spaces.

Let’s take a look!

Introducing Jabra Perform 45

Jabra Perform 45 is an earhook Bluetooth headset that weighs only 18 g. You can wear it on either side of your face.

It has a 2-microphone beamforming array, which enables it to eliminate 80% of the background noise, particularly important in retail environments, which tend to be noisy.

The 10 mm speaker has been designed for HD Voice audio quality with an emphasis on voice clarity to improve comprehension.

It has an open earbud design, which lets you stay in touch better with what’s happening around you, rather than fully blocking the ear canal. The package includes three sizes of EarGels, so you can choose your best fit.

You can use the headset as a regular Bluetooth headset, and it works great in that way. It is, after all, a Class 1 Bluetooth headset with a maximum range of 300 ft.

But what sets Perform 45 apart is its Push-To-Talk functionality.

How does Push-To-Talk (PTT) work on the Jabra Perform 45?

Perform 45 has a button on it that you can use to enable PTT mode. Push the button to talk: it’s that easy.

When used for Push-To-Talk, the headset can give you up to 20 hours of talk time on a single charge. When used as a regular Bluetooth headset, it gives you up to 8 hours. The difference is because in PTT mode, it only uses full battery power when a message is received or sent.

You can, actually, customize the function of this button. You can also set it to activate a voice assistant, to mute the microphone, to check the battery level or to speed dial an extension.

What platforms can you use PTT with?

For PTT to work on Perform 45, you need to use it with a walkie-talkie or PTT platform. It’s not a walkie-talkie system in itself.

Jabra developed the PTT headset to be compatible across a broad range services, so it there’s no lock-in with it. For example, it’s compatible with Microsoft Teams Walkie Talkie and Zebra Workforce Connect.

As for what devices you can use it with, Perform 45 is designed to use with mobile devices. It’s compatible with Android and iOS.

Face2Face mode improves customer service

Perform 45 also has an important feature that helps to improve customer service. If you’re talking with a customer, you don’t want any interruptions.

So the headset supports Face2Face mode. When you put the microphone boom up, all incoming messages from the PTT channel are blocked. No distractions!

Anything more?

A few stray observations about the headset:

It’s IP54 rated against dust and water ingress, which means it’s long-term durable. And it was designed to be easy to sanitize, so you can use the headset for multiple workers over shifts.

The headset has a slot on it for placing someone’s name, which is great if you’re using a fleet of headsets. You can also change the name of the headset in the software to track whose headset is whose.

Manage the headset using Jabra Direct and Jabra Xpress.

One last thing… Perform?

Longtime Jabra fans might be wondering about that name “Perform.”

Yep, Perform 45 is the first model of Jabra Headsets in the Perform Series. Jabra Perform headsets are designed for frontline workers, whose needs are quite different from office workers, remote workers, or home office workers. Perform Series headsets are intended to improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
