Spectralink WiFi Phones Interoperability Guide

Overview of compatible PBX platforms, call servers and WLAN access points.

Spectralink’s wireless VoIP phones are essential in industries ranging from warehousing to healthcare. The Wi-Fi-enabled wireless phones offer UC features such as calling, alarms and safety protocols, notifications, built-in web browsers and more. Spectralink Wi-Fi phones are also built to withstand harsh workplace conditions, with models designed to resist water and dust exposure, and models that are designed to handle potentially explosive environments.

All of these features are great, but Wi-Fi phones only work if the network can support them. If you are thinking of purchasing a Spectralink Wi-Fi phone (and why shouldn’t you?), we’ve compiled some information that may be pertinent to the phone’s functionality.

Spectralink 8400-series Compatibility

The 8400-series comprises the following models:

  • Spectralink 8440 and 8441
  • Spectralink 8452 and 8453

PBX Platforms and Call Servers

The 8400-series phones are available in two formats, one with SIP call server interoperability, and one with SIP and Microsoft Lync interoperability. All of the Spectralink 8400-series models are SIP PBX/call server compatible, but only those optimized for Microsoft Lync will work with Lync PBX/call servers.

Spectralink tests the interoperability of their Wi-Fi phones with many popular PBX software platforms and call servers, including Avaya, Cisco, Switchvox and many others.

For example, the Spectralink 8400-series phones will work with the following PBX software platforms*:

  • Avaya Communications Manager with Avaya Aura Session Manager, ver. 6.1.1
  • ^ or with Avaya Aura SIP Enablement Services (SES), ver. 5.2.1
  • Avaya IP Office 500v2, ver. 7.0 (12)
  • Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM), ver. 7.x, 8.x and 9.x
  • Digium Asterisk Business Edition, ver. C-2.3.2
  • Digium Switchvox, ver. Free 9529

An example of compatible call servers*:

  • Microsoft Lync 4.0 Build 7577.0
  • Avaya Communications Manager v5.0-6.1
  • Avaya (Nortel) Communications Server 1000 v 5.50J

WLAN Wireless Access Points

Spectralink also tests the interoperability of the 8400-series phones with various WLAN wireless access points. Spectralink deems compatible access points “VIEW Certified,” or “Voice Interoperability for Enterprise Wireless” Certified, and these devices include brands such as*:

  • Aruba
  • Avaya
  • Cisco
  • and more

Spectralink 8000-series Compatibility

The 8000-series comprises the following models:

  • Spectralink 8020
  • Spectralink 8030

WLAN Wireless Access Points

Spectralink tests the 8000-series Wi-Fi phones for interoperability with various WLAN wireless access points. Once they pass the test, they are labeled “VIEW Certified” by Spectralink for use with the 8000-series Wi-Fi phones. VIEW Certified stands for “Voice Interoperability for Enterprise Wireless” Certified. Brands with compatible WLAN access points include*:

  • Aruba
  • Avaya
  • Cisco
  • and more

WLAN wireless access points compatible with the 8400-series and the 8000-series have a lot of crossover, meaning they may work with both series. Please see the complete list, compiled by Spectralink, to ensure interoperability.
